I think that IE will be the most popular choice amongst your average Internet surfer as I think that most people are not even aware of Firefox or even Opera. I must admit I was one of these people until I saw the light and migrated to Firefox. Like you say there are plenty of useful plug-ins in Firefox and I will check out this FireFTP.
