The way I did it was to create an images folder in the same directory as the template files and call the images in from there.

When calling them in the css I use background: url(images/picture.jpg) for example and in the template files used &lt; ?php bloginfo(&#039;template_directory&#039;); ?&gt;/images/picture.png to call them in.
